Chapter 17

Brand’s grim expression answered the question for her. At the same time, her brain finally kicked into top gear. “You have any waterproof bags in here?”

“Try the glove box.”

It was a crazy idea and she had no clue where it came from, but it had to be worth a try—assuming whoever was behind them wasn’t out to kill them, in which case nothing would get them out of this alive. She switched the cell off, stuffed it into one of the bags, and rummaged in the glove box again. “Tape?”

“What?”

“Tape. You got any tape?”

“I’m not sure. I think there are some zip ties in there.”

Rachel shuddered. She’d have to be a masochist to use zip ties for what she was planning. “Tape would be better. Are you sure you don’t have any?”

“If it’s anywhere, it’s in the center storage unit.”

She found a treasure trove of man stuff… and a roll of duct tape. As quickly as she could, Rachel ripped a piece off the roll, wrapped the excess bag tightly around the cell, and sealed it with the tape.

Now she’d find out how insane her plan was.

Rachel shifted position so she could stretch her legs out and unfasten her combat pants. Then she grabbed the cell.

“What the hell are you doing, woman?”

Did she really have to describe it to him? Besides, the words sounded crazy enough in her head—saying them aloud would make her look certifiably insane. “Trust me, you don’t want to know.” Because she sure as hell didn’t, but it was the only way she could think of to give them a lifeline. Concealing a cell phone there shouldn’t be a problem… unless she had to walk. Or run. What the hell, she’d figure it out.

“Rachel—”

“Have you got a better idea?” She blew out a breath and wriggled a little more. If she and Brand were searched, it was unlikely they’d search her there. At least, she hoped it was.

“That cannot be comfortable.”

Rachel fastened her pants and bit her lip as she gingerly adjusted her position again. “All I can say is I’m glad you didn’t choose a model with a larger screen.”

“I’ll remember that when I upgrade—you know, just in case we find ourselves in this position again. How the hell did you think of that, anyway? And why?”

“I don’t know. The idea just came to me. I figured, if they’re trying to kidnap us rather than kill us, it might be easier to get our hands on weapons than a cell.”

“That makes sense.” Brand’s eyebrows ascended a few thousand feet and nearly went into orbit. “Yeah… Now I understand why you didn’t want the zip ties.”

The menacing pickup loomed large in the wing mirrors. As it swung to the left to overtake, Rachel had an idea. How could she have forgotten? “Where’s your gun?”

“Forget it. We don’t know how many there are, but I would guess at least two, and they’ll both or all be armed. We have one weapon—in a confrontation, we’ve already lost.”

He was right.
